ANIMAL: A Wild ride of Madness Which goes beyond Violence

One of the most controversial, yet successful Bollywood movie of the year. Remarked by some to be nothing less than a bloody show of a reprehensible, misogynistic man, while others claim it to be an absolute entertainer that portrays a larger than life character. So, what is this film about, is it worth watching? Let's dive deeper into the dark world of 'Animal' right here on 'Its show time with Shiva'

Synopsis (with no spoilers)

The synopsis of the movie is rather simple, a rich and wealthy man who fails at the hands of fatherhood ,however his son's love and passion for his father exceeds beyond the law and order. The story is of this complex father and son bond that leads to some astounding events that pushes our protagonist (Ranbir) to extreme limits

Although the synopsis sound innocent enough, the  director who is the Telegu legend Sandeep Reddy Vanga, maker of Arjun Reddy took on the challenge to “show them what a violent film is” after he was criticised for his previous film for showing toxic relationships. Personally the violence is over exaggerated. In the total run time of 3 hours 21 minutes, less than 45 minutes contain action sequences. These action scenes were violent n nature but not too gory or revolting. Apart from physical violence , there are a couple of domestic violence portrayed in the film which might have added to the ‘A’ certificate given by the censor board.

This movie is a true definition of a wild ride. As the name clearly suggests , we get a raw version of our characters especially the protagonists which takes us through a wild ride throughout the long run time. A straightforward plot with an unconventionally extensive run time, why are people crazy about this film? Let’s look into couple of reasons why:
  • Character complexity is a field that many directors and writers struggle whereas some excel in this area which results in the sheer success and acceptance of the characters. Each fictional role can be explored to many levels, introducing many layers as they develop. In this factor SRV did a great job exploring and developing his characters. He was able to bring out the innermost instincts, and feelings from his characters, which allowed room for development.
  •  The Larger than life concept which means the idea of a regular person  being able to execute actions and  do things that’s ideally not possible in the real world , while keeping the shell of realism in it. The classic example is all of the typical Indian heroes. This movie also explores a larger than life concept by bringing it to our protagonist. Indian audience especially admire and enjoy these larger than life characters hence it’s not surprise that People enjoyed the Ranbir in animal as well.
  • Keeping someone engaged for more than 2 hours itself is a tedious task however, SRV managed to keep the audience captivated for more than 3 hours with his emeplary Direction and Screenplay. Pair it with the Riveting BGM and music, we get a phenomenal  entertainer on screen. Each scene filled with potent content filled with emotions.
There are certain downsides like every other creation. The extensive runtime, while it had worked out for me personally , it would not have for many others. The very fundamental core of the character has caught up criticism for depicting and justifying misogyny and violence. In conclusion this film is for those who cherish entertainment brought by larger than life characters, and also for the ones who validates a deeper exploration of A plot and its characters. The  main reasons for my rating includes the success in keeping me engaged for the entire run time and the exceptional acting by Ranbir Kapoor.

Personal Rating 8.5/10
